30th April
Well that’s it; it is all over for another 6 months.
The pub is being painted back to normal, but there is no need to worry about the post festival blues because the next festival dates have already been confirmed as Monday 26th October – Saturday 31st October.
This festival has been our busiest, longest ( and most bizarre ) to date and I feel it my duty to thank everyone who helped out on “ The Back Baaa “ – Neal McGrath, Launchpad, Batemans Bryan ( Also thank you for the amazing festival shirts!), Builder , Colin , Jax , Charlie, Leggy Linell and Nigel.
Of course we couldn’t forget about Back Bar Ted whose expertise is invaluable and it wouldn’t be a Merchants Beer Fest without him, so thank you Ted we look forward to having you back.
The introduction of a Saturday night to the festival proved a massive hit which we shall definitely be repeating again.
We have 2 major upcoming events here at the pub now –
After the success of our first German night we have decided to repeat it again on Wednesday 23rd September- more details to follow.
And secondly …. THE LIONS TOUR, we here at the Merchants Inn shall be showing every Lions game this summer starting Saturday 30th May.
23rd April
Happy St Georges Day
Apologies for the lack of updates this week, the beer has been in fine flow and I felt it my professional duty to try them all at great lengths!
The festival has proved a great success thus far; Monday saw Dr Busker & the Dorset RATS in fine tongue in cheek form as always.
Tuesday had Black PARROT Seaside putting the F back into Folk with a selection of comedic tunes.
Wednesday we had The CATS Whiskers playing a range of classic sing-a-long songs, I swear I even saw people dancing!
As today is St George’s day, I urge you to come to a quintessential English pub and raise a glass or 2 of fine festival ale to our great patron saint whilst tucking into a HOG roast and watching Black Annis Women’s Morris Dancers!
The food has almost quite literally been jumping off of our Darwin themed menu, with evolutionary themed food such as Whitebait, Crocodile and Kangaroo I am sure you can find something to tickle your taste buds! For something a little more adventurous why not try a bag of Thai green curried CRICKETS or some barbecued WORMS , bags of which are available at the bar all day.
And remember , for those of you wishing to avoid the dreaded hangover at work fear not , the festival runs until Saturday night making this our longest ever, I however cannot guarantee just how much beer will be available if we carry on at this rate!
4 days to go!!!!
Well that’s it! All of our deliveries are in, the stillage’s are built , the programme is done , and we are ready for what is sure to be our wildest ever festival. Food shall be available until 8pm everyday throughout the week from a very very special menu.
Come Monday morning I shall have a list up of the first wave of beers for both front and back bar. In the meantime , have a good weekend – no doubt I shall see you all in the pub at some juncture this weekend , if not I look forward to seeing you all next week at All Creatures Great & Small.
9th April
The festival is only 11 days away now! Almost all the deliveries are in, the glasses have been delivered and the cooling equipment has been dropped off as well…..we are looking good! Most importantly, Back Bar Ted has confirmed
On a different note, our back room is available for hire all year round, in the past we have staged, leaving/retirement dos , birthday parties and even a wedding! More recently we have staged several complete conference days which include-The room for a meeting, lunch, dinner, refreshments and accommodation. Please ring or email the pub for more details and prices.
2nd April
The festival is almost upon us, and for you regular pub goers you may notice something a little bit WILD about the exterior of the pub! Overnight our pub became painted like a ZEBRA! This is no word of a lie, have a look in the newly created All Creatures Great And Small gallery.
We have yet another beer list for the festival with a few amendments from the last one, that can be viewed in the Beer Fest page...
Only 18 days to go !
26th March 09
Well the 6 nations has drawn to a close in epic style , the pub was like a JUNGLE, Wales were unable to derail Irelands grand slam dream , a resurgent England showed what they are capable of when defeating the Scots in convincing style and France ran WILD over the Italians. A lot of players threw their names in to contention for the LIONS tour, which begins in 65 days! Never fear though Rugby returns to the Merchants Inn big screen this weekend where on Saturday Gloucester take on The Ospreys who will happily welcome back their international stars , followed by Cardiff taking on Northampton both in an EDF Trophy semi final action.
Speaking of tours…..
The Merchants Inn will be going on tour again soon, the day after the beer festival to be precise (Sunday 26th April), where we shall be going to 3 different beer festivals
3 Festivals
3 Towns
1 Day
Impossible I hear you say ? Never, we shall be visiting pubs in Cambridge , St Albans & Sandy all in one day. The cost is £20 which will include some grub , transport and your first pint….. Bargain. There are only 15 places left so sign up quickly.
Speaking of the Beer Festival, there has been a COCK up , Black PARROT Seaside are now playing on the Tuesday , and The CATS Whiskers are now playing Wednesday.
20th March 09
The 6 nations draws to a close this weekend with 3 matches in 1 day , get here early because it will be busy!
With that in mind I feel it my duty to inform you that we will be showing all of The Lions Tour and England ( Hopefully ) retaining the Ashes.
The Beer Festival is now less than 5 weeks away ! This is a perfect opportunity to entertain business clients , team building exercises or just a good opportunity to have a few beers with your work colleagues.
And finally , today is Barry’s birthday , if you happen to see him tonight
( I am quite sure he shall be having a few drinks ! ) wish him a happy birthday and buy him a drink , I’m pretty confident he wont refuse!
13th March 09
The Cricket is over now …… But we have the ashes to look forward to! On the subject of cricket , if you fancy yourself as a bit of a KP or Freddie , why not join the REAL MCC ( Merchants Cricket Club ) , for more info ring the pub or pop in and see Scott or John.
The 6 nations is almost over , but it finishes in great style , with what we have dubbed “ Super Saturday “ … 3 games in 1 day ! This is the perfect weekend for you to reserve your table and pin of beer, a bargain at only £80 ! With that in mind its only 78 days till the Lions Tour !
4th March 09
The Belgian Night was a huge success , I am quite confident that there were a few sore heads in Rugby on Thursday morning which we may have been responsible for! The Moules were in full flow along with an abundance of beer , 5 bottle bins were filled with empty bottles …. A new record for us! The standout beers of the evening were Scladis , Veddett extra white and Westmalle Tripel.
The 6 nations has a small break this weekend , but all your sporting needs can still be fulfilled with Newcastle V Sale ( 1pm ) & Wasps V London Irish ( 3-30pm ) on Sunday.
On the subject of Rugby , how would you like to win 2 tickets to see England V Scotland at Twickenham on Saturday 21st March ? Simply just buy a raffle ticket from the bar £1 for 1 , £5 for 6 or £10 for 15! The draw will take place after England V France next weekend.
And remember the Beer Festival is now only 47 days away !!!!
19th February 09
The Belgian night is just around the corner , have a look at the events page for a sneak peek at the beer and food menu.
There are still a few (and I mean a few) tickets left for the night! Food can still be purchased on the night though.
On the subject of food , we have launched a new menu this week , complete with our expert recommendations of what beer is suitable with each dish ! The menu bar contains all you need to know.
The 6 nations takes a break this weekend but you can still get your rugby fix here when Harlequins face Gloucester on Saturday at 2-30pm. The Pins of beer are proving a massive hit , you can still book one for any of the remaining weekends ( of the 6 nations ). We are also showing all of England V West Indies on our big screen.
And finally …… (thought I would save the biggest news till last!)
For the first time ever our Beer Festival will run till Saturday ! Previous festivals have finished on Friday but this will be an unprecedented 6 days of beer consumption.
4th February 09
Have a look at the newly added Beer Festival page for an advanced look at the list of what’s available at “The All Creatures Great & Small Beer Festival.” Please remember that it’s only a provisional list and there are more beers to be added nearer the time.
The 6 Nations is almost upon us!
If like me you hate going to the bar during the match and missing a crucial try or penalty because of it then fear not…
For the paltry sum of £80 you can have your very own barrel of beer on your table (36 pints) and a guaranteed table reservation and therefore not miss a drop (goal) of the action. That works out at £2.22 a pint ! Phone the pub or ask at the bar for more details and booking.
The Belgian night is now only 3 weeks away but we still have some tickets available, there will be a list of the beer up within the next week.
This Tuesday we have James Hollingsworth playing live. James was recently voted one of the Top 3 Live Gigs by the Independent newspaper. Take my advice, get here early as it will be busy!
For more info on James look at

14th January 09
Well New Year has been and gone and whilst most people seem to be suffering from the January blues, The Merchants certainly isn’t. We are busy planning the year ahead and to begin with we have loads of Rugby (Heineken cup, Premiership) and of course the 6 Nations over the coming weeks. For those you who aren’t fans of the egg shaped ball we have England’s cricket tour of the West Indies showing throughout February. All times and games are in the Real Ale, Real Sport page.
Fancy a credit crunching European midweek break? Well never fear, for The Merchants are here with the return of the ever-popular Belgian Night taking place on Wednesday 25th February. If you buy your dinner tickets in advance (£6.50) we will give you a Belgian beer absolutely! There will be a ‘Plats du Jour’ menu (including the old favourite Moules & Frites!), traditional music and of course only the best beer our Belgian cousins have to offer. Get your ticket now as numbers are very limited and selling fast.
Regular drinkers in the pub may have noticed a few beers available on a fairly consistent basis, namely Purity’s Mad Goose and Bateman’s XB; more info can be found on our beer page under regular ales.
30th December
Well Christmas is done and dusted for another year, but the party isn’t over yet, remember New Years eve we are hosting a 1940’s Blitz theme, and for those of you who attended the Wild West party last year, let me tell you this , this year will be the best ever New Year we have done! I could tell you what we have got planned…… but that would ruin the surprise!
The Merchants Cricket club took on another guise this weekend and became The Merchants Rugby Club and played against St Blootians XV , unfortunately the boys lost (17-20) but they gave it 100%, they didn’t do to badly considering that 2 players had never played before and most of the others hadn’t played for 6-15 years! Photos will be going up soon.
And with 2008 nearly over a full review of the year will be available to read next week.
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE MERCHANTS INN

15th December
Yes, yes, oh yes! The Merchants Inn is coasting through Christmas! Our fire burns brightly, our tree is upside-down and our cellar is well and truly stocked! Come to the pub to get away from shopping and coldness over the next week and a half and we’ll gladly tank you up. After all, you’ll be seeing your family for ages over the festive period anyway, perhaps we could aid with a bit of welcome relief...
Feedback for our Blitz themed New Years Eve party seems very positive indeed, with a lot of emphasis on the costumes! So far I personally know of a U-boat commander, a bomb, some pilots and even Winston Churchill himself coming to the pub! Tally ho, pip pip etc.
Keep drinking!
28th November
This weekend see’s the end of the autumn internationals , but never fear , The Heineken cup returns next weekend and also we have The Baa Baa’s taking on Australia on Wednesday. But of course who could forget the big one of a high flying New Zealand team taking on an England team full of potential at 2-30pm.
We have added a new drink to our range ( not usually big news ) but this is no ordinary drink , a good winter warmer , no its not mulled wine , its far better than that ….. Winter Pimm’s – served with hot apple juice and fresh fruit , imagine drinking that and relaxing on the big sofa’s in front of our log fire …. That’s how winter should be.
20th November
Another full Saturday of Rugby watching lies ahead with England taking on the World Champions , South Africa , in a rematch of the 2007 Rugby World Cup final , kicking off at 2-30pm. And then it is Warren Gatland taking on his home country of New Zealand with Wales at 5-15pm. My advice …. Get here early , have a Merchants Breakfast at midday and enjoy a full day of quality Rugby , I know I will be doing the same.
And finally , Happy Birthday to Michelle ( Scott the Landlords Partner ) , Scotts present to her ? A engagement ring! Congratulations to the both of you on your engagement.

Friday 31st October
The beer festival is entering its last day and has proved to be a hit , we end tonight when we close at 1am, so for those of you who have avoided fulfilling your full beer drinking potential due to the dreaded work hangover in the past , you now need not worry ! And as today is Halloween the staff will be in fancy dress so why not don a costume and join them? Who knows, the best costume may even win a prize?

Dr Busker was in fine form as always ( along with The Pirate Crew ) , melodic cries of “ More Beer , More Beer “ echoed around the pub . Tuesday saw Kel Elliott making her beer festival debut , and she went down a storm , putting a jazzy twist on some classics and some modern tunes ( I personally have never heard The White Stripes played in such an amazing way before !) . Wednesday had the country’s finest brewers pop in for a beer ( trying to prove whose was best ! ) by drinking gallons of their own brews , whilst munching on a good old fashioned hog roast ( thanks to the Big Red Pig company for supplying ) . Last night we had .... beer and more beer!
Which brings me to tonight, I hope to see you all in a few hours for an after work pint or two!
A big thanks has to go to all of our back bar guest staff- Brian from Batemans , Faye Brookes , Charlie Smith , Jax Ward , Rob “ Bob The Builder “ Smith , Tom Middleton , Capt Rob Hensby , John Linnell . And of course who could forget the biggest thanks of all has to go to Mr Back Bar himself , Ted . This man is synonymous with the Merchants Inn beer festivals and without him they would not be possible , so when you see him tonight buy the man a pint , he deserves it .
27th October
There is a buzz in the air of anticipation , the festival begins today , the beer is clear and drinking well ,and all I can say now is ...... Lets get supping these fine ales !
Tonight we have Dr Busker kicking off the festivities with a unique blend of saucy folk ballads , if you ever meet a man more proud to be British I will be very surprised , in fact if you meet a man who loves his beer more then I will be truly surprised.
I will see you later for a pint or two
22nd October
The list has been finalised ! We have done it! We have got 70 beers from all over the country for the festival making it the biggest we have ever done, surely the biggest in Rugby?
A full list can be viewed in the events page , beer fest page and the guest ales page.
The Merchants Inn has joined the 21st century and had Wi-Fi installed ( finally ) so now you can have a cheeky pint and “ work “ at the same time , just ask behind the bat for the passcode and away you go!
