About the Merchants Cricket Club
The REAL MCC was established in the early hours of one very drunken night in 2007. The idea was to have a reason to meet up on a regular occasion, with a load of great people, to enjoy the summer weather, good beer and of course cricket! So in 2007 we enrolled in the Rugby and District Cricket League.
Seen as we were the new boys on the circuit we had to start in Division 4. In our first season as the MCC we battled to get enough players out on a regular basis, as well as struggling with inexperience. This meant our team just missing out on promotion, finishing 3rd overall, behind Stretton CC's 2nd team and overall winners Newbold Revel. This was a great season for us and really helped to inspire the team to do more to help establish a truely unique cricket club.
2008 saw some amazing cricket from the MCC! Preforming well above our expectations we managed to go unbeaten all season to clinch the Division 4 Championship and promotion to Division 3! All this after an intense showdown with West Haddon (eventual runners up) which saw them score a run off the last ball of the innings to tie the game!
So with promotion came bigger and better things for the club. Its was a change from white kits to full colours for the Mighty MCC. With swanky new kit sponsored by Stowford Press (ideal seen as we are a pub team) we felt great about our prospects for the new season.
Starting as we left off the previous year with a some hard fought wins things were looking good. Unfortunately we experienced what all players and clubs go through at some point in this sport...... loss of form!!! Coupled with some rough luck which saw a few games swing away from us, we sat mid table at the end of the season.
This only strengthened the club and the bonds that were forming. The Real MCC was looking forward to a new season! A season with more recruits, more friends and even more pubs to appreciate!
