Jucamaya

Next Here: TBC

Jucamaya

Jucamaya is a contemporary jazz quintet based in the midlands. Its music is original but not too wayout. Its tunes are melodic, memorable and stylish, modern but in tune with the jazz tradition... and nearly always have a strong rhythmic element. Pianist Graham Dent composes most of the music, but the band also take pleasure in dipping into the established jazz standards repertoire. The front line comprises saxophonist Ian Hill and trombonist Richard Baker, and the rhythm section is completed by Tom Bull on double bass, and Steve Laffy (or Nick Millward) on drums.

Jazz, funk, fusion, soul, R&B, and even straight-ahead rock 'n' roll influences are apparent in his hard driving urban blues. His guitar work is clean and percussive, marked by rapid-fire single-note picking, rhythmic string damping, and artificial harmonics. While he includes a number of worthwhile originals, his fresh, con ....More details
